LibertyBus Tests Another Electric Bus

LibertyBus is testing a new zero-emissions bus which is powered by electricity, in the latest trial to find one that suits Jersey's roads.

The bus company has partnered with Mellor Bus to trial its 'Sigma 8' model in the island for the next three weeks.

Both companies want to see how the bus will cope with the island's routes, tight squeezes and sharp corners.

LibertyBus will look at its efficiency by analysing energy consumption, despite a full charge taking just under three hours.

Mellor Bus' Sigma 8 bus will be powered by CATL 210 kWh batteries meaning it can travel 160 miles on a single charge.

Kevin Hart, Director for LibertyBus, says the company is excited for the trial.

"The Mellor Sigma range are great little buses and we can’t wait to trial the bus on the network and share the results of the trial with the Government of Jersey."

It is 2.35m wide and 8.7m long and has capacity for 60 passengers.

Richard MaAhews from Mellow says it can 'navigate the narrow or constricted routes of the Channel Islands with ease'.

“We believe our Sigma range of buses have huge potenDal to play a significant part in the island’s efforts to improve its public transport. These trials are a significant moment for Mellor as we look to expand our bus offering in the Channel Islands.”

The new bus will be on show until 2:00pm today (13 July) at the Weighbridge, and the travel company is inviting islanders to take a look.

LibertyBus has previously tested the Yutong E9 in January 2023, and the Higer Steed in August 2021 and the The Metrodecker EV in 2019.
