Every child in three Jersey school nurseries will now get dedicated one-to-one story time with an adult every week.
Every Child Our Future's 'Story Starters' programme has been expanded - meaning nearly 200 children aged three and four will benefit from individual attention, shared stories, and opportunities to develop their communication and early literacy skills.
Three 'Story Starters' Lead Champions have been appointed, with one based at each of the participating nurseries:
- Janvrin
- First Tower
- Rouge Bouillon
They will work alongside the programme's existing volunteers.
Andrew Willis, Headteacher at Janvrin, said:
"Having an Every Child Our Future Story Starters Lead Champion in our nursery will help us bring the joy of stories to every child. By getting to know the children and responding to their different interests, languages and needs, it will help everyone join in and enjoy the programme.

"Sharing books, chatting about stories and exploring words through play will help children grow in confidence, develop their communication and early literacy skills, and discover a love of reading that can last a lifetime."
Assistant Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, Deputy Lucy Stephenson, said:
"The early years play a vital role in shaping a child's future learning and wellbeing. Programmes such as Story Starters help children develop the communication and literacy skills that underpin success throughout their education.
"It is fantastic to see this initiative expanding so that every child attending these nurseries can enjoy regular one-to-one story time. The commitment of volunteers, school staff, supporters and Every Child Our Future is making a real difference to children's lives and helping to ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential."
