Third Seal Rescued From CI Beach

A third seal in a month has been rescued from Channel Island beaches - this time from Pembroke bay in Guernsey, after two were found in Jersey in November.

The pup, which has been named Grinch, was found to be just 12 kilos, far below the average 40 - 60 kilos a healthy pup should be.

Manager at the GSPCA, Steve Byrne, says he was 'very poorly'.

"The pup this about six weeks old and is extremely emaciated and has been having around-the-clock care at the charity in our seal facility.

When they hit around two to three weeks of age would be around the time the mum leaves them and they get them really fat up to 60 kgs before then.

It looks like Grinch has had a really bad start in life, He's one of the skinniest we've had."

Grinch is now being cared for at the GSCPA's intensive care unit and is receiving tube feeds every two hours to get his weight and strength up.

Steve explains how the charity gets its seals ready to be released back into the wild.

"When poorly seal pups arrive here the first stage is to try and stabilise them to see if they require any medications or worming. We tube-feed them every two hours.

That then moves on as the pup gets stronger and stronger onto a fish soup. We chop up mackerel and herring to make that.

Once they've had that, and they have started learning to feed themselves, we introduce whole fish to the pups."

The GSPCA is planning to build a new wildlife hospital but is still looking for donations to fund the build, which was approved in October 2022.

The charity now also needs extra freezer space after their chest freezer broke.

In November, two seal pups  - Faulkner and Jem  - who were rescued from Jersey and transported over to Guernsey to be looked after.

Steve says they're doing 'really well'.

"As of last week they were introduced to the pool and they absolutely love swimming and playing.

We are so pleased that they've come from so near to death to where they are now, which is which are looking like reasonably healthy seal pups.

They have long way to go until they're well enough for release but we are very hopeful now they're doing so well."
