Jersey Introduces Free Period Products

Islanders will be able to pick up free period products as the government tackles period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation.

Women and girls in Jersey will be able to access free period products in Jersey due to a new government pilot scheme.

It aims to ensure families across the island do not worry about period poverty.

They will be made available at easy-to-reach places, such as Jersey Library, Fort Regent Centre, and Les Quennevais Sports Centre.

Minister for Social Security, Deputy Elaine Millar, says she wants to remove the stigma around periods and normalise this in the island's community:

"No one should feel embarrassed or feel they are unable to go to school or work because they do not have the period products they need."

Products will also be available from Shelter and the Salvation Army from next week.

People who use period products are also being asked in a public consultation what sort of products they would like to see available.

Deputy Elaine Millar says she believes the free products are a better alternative to removing GST from period products, which was a decision made by the States previously.
