This year’s Jersey Christmas Appeal charity auction on Channel 103 has raised more than £75,000 for good causes in the island.
Hosted by Channel 103 Breakfast presenter Peter Mac, Jersey broadcaster and writer Fiona Walker along with BBC Radio Jersey’s afternoon presenter Darcy Kelly, the six-hour radiothon on Sunday (7 December) was the culmination of a month-long fundraising drive with star lots including a week's stay at a luxury ski chalet in Chamonix, lunch with Jersey’s Chief Minister and a trolley dash around Coop Grand Marché.
Someone paid £5,500 to be a character in a Peter James novel.
The holder of ticket number 1784 will be going off to Kenya on an amazing Safari holiday in the 'Pledge a Wedge' raffle, where the destination for a luxury break gets more exotic the more tickets are sold.
The final amount raised was £75,557, which will go to help more than 1,500 disadvantaged families in Jersey enjoy a better Christmas with food vouchers, festive hampers and gift vouchers being distributed in the run-up to the big day.
Channel 103’s Peter Mac said, “It’s an amazing result - truly beyond our wildest dreams, and a wonderful early gift for the appeal.
“Once again, islanders have wrapped this brilliant appeal in warmth and generosity, showing just how bright the festive spirit in Jersey really is.”
Appeal treasurer David Pirouet added, “From the businesses that have given so generously to the Channel 103 listeners who took the time to phone in their bids, the response this year has been truly heart-warming.
“It’s an incredible amount of money, and it means we can support many more families - including some who are reaching out for help for the very first time in what has been a difficult year for so many.
“Thank you, Jersey, for your kindness and generosity.”
